Event Wrap-up

IBC's 7th Annual Targeting Metabolic Disorders offered three days of in-depth science and technology solutions that provided advice to support the development of safe and effective obesity and diabetes therapeutics. The event was enjoyed by all who participated and interest is already mounting for next year's event. Please check back for details on the 2010 event later this year. We hope to see you there!

Program highlights for 2009 included:

  • Explorations of the effects of metabolic disease therapies on cardiac structure and function, tolerance to myocardial ischemia and heart failure
  • Understandings of how expressed or latent cardiovascular dysfunctions seen in a target population may drive a need to conduct modified or additional safety pharmacology assessments in diseased subjects
  • Considerations of the benefits to obese patients with diabetes from a small degree of weight loss, and the potential for therapeutics directed at "diabesity"
  • Case studies of the next generation of targets and approaches for targeting metabolic diseases, including anti-angiogenesis, antibody therapeutics, mitochondrial biogenesis, novel peptide therapeutics and protease inhibitors, among others
  • Examinations of prescribing trends in metabolic diseases: how clinicians are treating metabolic disorders, and how does impacts the prospects for development of novel combination therapeutics
  • Perspectives of the current regulatory landscape for metabolic disease therapeutics, and how new guidelines provide opportunities for new products that provide health benefits outside of the traditional scope
