IBC's 6th annual Targeting Metabolic Disorders conference was held on March 17-19, 2008 in beautiful Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The event was a big success and we have been receiving a lot of great feedback from conference attendees and presenters.
Highlights From The 2008 Meeting:
- Roche reviewed progress in resolving safety and efficacy challenges associated with small molecule obesity targets that affect lipid metabolism
- Nastech explained a method of intranasal (IN) delivery for macromolecules that helps to overcome challenges associated with conventional administration of therapeutic peptides
- Incyte reviewed a proof-of-concept human study showing evidence for metabolic improvements in T2D subjects after short-term 11beta-HSD1 inhibition therapy
- Pennsylvania State University presented new research to further understandings of the role of macrophages and cytokines in insulin resistance
- GlaxoSmithKline outlined a novel high-resolution form of body composition analysis used to measure the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases and the effects of novel drugs
- CombinatoRx outlined a case study of the challenges of clinical trial design for combination therapeutics based on experiences with a phase 2a clinical trial of CRx-401 in Type 2 diabetes
- Duke University demonstrated how tools for static profiling of intermediary metabolites define alterations in metabolism that contribute to development of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD)
- AstraZeneca described the pros and cons of different methods for the PET imaging of beta cell mass
- University of North Carolina showed progress in developing systems biology tools for understanding intervention points in MAP Kinase signaling pathways
- Shenzhen Chipscreen Biosciences (China) discussed potential solutions for resolving side effect problems with PPAR targets using a case study of a configuration-restricted PPAR pan-agonist for T2D now in human trials
