Speakers, attendees, guests and sponsors alike were full of praises for this inaugural event's keynote speakers who represented the views from the government agency (Norman Baylor, CBER, FDA); the public health agency (Jon Kim Andrus, PAHO/WHO), the industry (Rino Rappuoli, Novartis) as well as foreign public health agency (Stephen Chatfield, HPA UK). These visionaries not only presented the promise of vaccines in treating a plethora of diseases, but also emphasized the need for international collaboration to help deliver on the promise of vaccines.
The 2-day Next Generation Vaccines conference comprised of 2 parallel tracks - Discovery & Development and Production & Process Development.
In the Discovery & Development track, speakers discussed about the advances in adjuvants, the state-of-the-art delivery technologies as well as novel vaccines in development for infectious diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and autoimmune diseases.
In the Production & Process Development track, speakers explored the merits of cell substrates and embryonic stem cells in vaccine production; offered tips on cost-efficient manufacturing as well as how to overcome challenges in scale up and pilot production from clinical trials to large scale production.
The special session, Developing and Manufacturing BioDefense Vaccines saw some illustrious speakers including Michael Callahan of DARPA; Jerome Donlon of BARDA; Robert House of Dynport Vaccine Company and Pete Latham of Biopharm Services Inc. The session drew out lots of discussions on the pandemic and biodefense emergency preparedness in US and UK.
