2009 Event Wrap-Up

The inaugural BioProcess International™ China conference & exhibition was a resounding success. With almost 160 attendees over the 2 days, the event was abuzz with exciting presentations, engaged conversations, and captive audiences. Most attendees come from China, with about 25% from international/regional countries including Japan, India, Korea, Taiwan, US etc.

As a first event of its kind in China, the conference covers a wide spectrum of technical topics that introduce attendees to the whole value chain of bioprocessing, including cell line engineering & development, cell culture, analytical characterization, analytical methods development, purification & recovery, technology transfer and single use technologies. The Plenary Sessions, meanwhile, discusses trends and developments in 3 main areas - novel biotherapeutics, biosimilars and vaccines.

Attendees were most enthralled by the keynote presentations from Dr. Berthold Bodeker, Bayer Healthcare AG who discusses capacity planning, outsourcing and technology transfer - a most apt topic for China today; while US FDA's Dr. Marion Gruber's talk on vaccine manufacturing and development from the US FDA's perspective was an instant hit among the audience.

With China moving aggressively into biosimilars, the Plenary Session on Day Two brought forth many questions and discussions. Many are eager not only to find out how to develop biosimilars in China, but also the state of affairs of biosimliars in US.

The high interest in the event no doubt testifies to China's huge potential as the next biggest market for biologics manufacturing and processing. What China need now is to build up its capabilities and skill-sets through training and education to make itself a formidable competitor to the manufacturing countries in the world. As a leading provider of conferences on biopharmaceutical development, IBC aims to bring these events to China and the rest of Asia, and be the biopharmaceutical industry's partner-of-choice for their training needs.
